One of the keys to finding the best credit card deals online includes an understanding of what APR means. A single credit card may have multiple APRs. Understanding your card’s APR structure and how it is paid off can help you to save hundreds a year in interest charges.

The APR or annual percentage rate is the way a credit card company states the yearly interest rate that you pay when you carry a balance, take out a cash advance or transfer a balance from another card. A 16% APR on a balance means that you are paying 16% per year in interest.

Credit cards frequently have varying APRs for different types of balances on the card. Even low interest rate credit cards may have a low interest rate on purchases, but a surprisingly high rate for ATM cash advances. Knowing what rates your bank is charging for each type of transaction could save you from unexpected interest charges.

What is APR? 

Here is a way to explain APR interest rate differences in terms of the are different ways you might use your credit cards.

Purchase APR. What is APR on purchases? This is the annual interest rate that you must pay on your purchases. Many cards offer 0% APR or a low APR on purchases as an introductory rate for up to 15 months. Rather than paying off the balance in full each month, make minimum payments. Put the rest of the cost of your purchases into a high-yield savings account. When the introductory APR offer ends, use the money in your account to pay off the credit card balance.

Balance transfer APR. Some of the best credit card deals online include introductory 0% APR balance transfers for as long as 18 months. These introductory low interest rate credit cards give you an opportunity to apply the full amount of your monthly payment to paying off your balance.

Alternatively, you might look for a balance transfer deal offering a low APR for the life of the balance. Some credit cards will make a permanent low APR balance transfer offer during the time that you have your card. This builds customer loyalty, while giving you the opportunity to transfer your high interest balances. If you already are carrying a balance on the same card at a higher interest rate, you might consider paying it off before you do the transfer. Otherwise, your monthly payments will go to paying off the lower APR balance transfer first.

When you make a balance transfer, you will be charged a balance transfer fee, typically about 3% of the amount transferred. So a 0% balance transfer offer will have an additional 3% charged to the transfer. In spite of this extra fee, a low interest transfer can still be a deal for you if you are paying higher interest on your current credit card.

These balance transfer deals are rarely incuded in credit card offers for people with no credit or bad credit. It really does pay to raise your credit score to an excellent rating.

Cash advance APR. When you use your credit card to withdraw money from an ATM or pay a bill with a credit card check, you are making a cash advance. Frequently ATM withdrawls have a high rate APR, even if you use low interest rate credit cards.

Be aware that in addition to a high APR, cash advances usually have an additional cash advance fee. This fee is often in the neighborhood of 3%. But be warned. There is usually a minimum associated with the fee. If you write a credit card check for a small amount, say $20, and your minimum cash advance fee is $20, then you are paying 100% on your check! Also, there is no grace period for cash advances. The interest starts accumulating immediately.

Tiered APRs. Some cards have tiered APRs, meaning that they charge different rates at different levels of the outstanding balance. For instance, a card might charge 14% on balances up to $1000, and then charge 16% on balances above this amount.

A penalty APR. Credit card companies try to discourage you from making late payments. If you do so, your APR will often be increased by the credit card company. These increases are usually dramatic, as high as 30-35%. For instance, your card agreement might say, “If your credit card payment arrives late two times within a six-month period, a penalty rate will apply.” In addition, late payments can lower your credit rating.

Explain APR interest as an introductory APR. Often a low rate or even a 0% introductory rate is offered on balance transfers and/or purchases for 6-18 months. After this rate expires, then a different rate will apply to your remaining balances.

The best way to understand APR interest rates is to ask what is the APR for the ways that I will be using the credit card. Will I be doing balance transfers? Do I need low interest rate credit cards? Will I be making cash advances? Will I write credit card checks? A good way to make credit card comparisons is look for the lowest APR rate for the ways in which you plan to use your card. These considerations can help you locate best credit card deals online.
