Buying a Big Ticket Item on Your Credit Card? Check Your Credit Card Rate First

Banks are raising their credit card rate right and left. Or should we say, up and up. Even after the new credit card rules take effect in 2010, a bank can still raise your interest rates on new purchases. And the sky is the limit.

What is especially irksome is that while you must receive notice of any changes in your APR rate, you can easily discard the notice thinking it is junk mail. Once you make a purchase after a change takes effect, it is considered that you are accepting it. So if you go to make a purchase, you may be in for a suprise to find that your credit card interest rate has risen.

What to do? If you are making a major purchase, then you may want to call your customer service to double check on your iinterest rate.

If you make a purchase and were unaware of the credit card rate increase, by all means call your credit card company and complain. While there is no guarantee, they be willing to give you a break.
